Guide: storing laboratory chemicals safely

Safe chemical storage is an essential part of running a responsible laboratory. Good practices protect your staff, preserve the quality of your reagents and help your laboratory stay compliant with safety requirements.
Begin with clear organisation. Store chemicals according to their compatibility rather than simply in alphabetical order, keeping incompatible groups — such as acids and bases, or oxidisers and flammables — well separated. Always keep containers clearly labelled and tightly closed when not in use.
Environment plays a major role in stability. Many reagents should be kept in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Temperature-sensitive products may require refrigerated storage, and some chemicals are best kept in dedicated cabinets designed for their hazard class.
Finally, keep good records. Track opening dates, expiry dates and stock levels so that older material is used first and nothing is kept beyond its useful life. If you need storage supplies, labels or replacement reagents, our team is ready to help — just send us your requirement for a quotation.
